Human Rights Code Violations

From discrimination in the workplace to unequal access to education and healthcare, violations of human rights are far too common. In Canada and Ontario, the Codes are meant to ensure that all individuals and groups are treated fairly and equally, regardless of their gender, race, religion, age, and other personal characteristics.

Have You Been a Victim of Discrimination?

We Can Assist You in a Number of Ways

LGBTQ2S+

Everyone should be able to have the same opportunities and benefits and be treated with equal dignity and respect including members of the LGBTQ2S+ community. This includes family and friends of this protected community, as well.

Housing

The Code guarantees equal treatment for everyone in housing without discrimination or harassment. It is also protected if a person is discriminated against because he or she is a

friend or relative of those protected by the Code.

Employment

Human rights laws prohibit employers and union representatives from discriminating. Accordingly, in most cases, you cannot be treated differently because of your differences listed in the Human Rights Code.

Contracts

Discrimination in contracts is illegal, and yet it still happens. Discrimination can happen in any type of contract—especially those that are long-term or involve a lot of money. This isn't right. It's not fair to people who have different backgrounds than others.

Medical & Healthcare

Discrimination by doctors is a serious problem in the healthcare world. It can lead to patients being mistreated or neglected, which puts their lives at risk. Doctors should be trained to treat all patients equally and with respect, no matter what their race, gender, or ability may be.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a right for women. Breastfeeding also occurs after delivery. Women should not face discrimination in services, housing, and employment because of their breastfeeding choice. No one should harass or negatively treat them because they choose not to breastfeed.

IGNORANCE IS NOT A DEFENCE UNDER THE LAW

Discover How We Can Help

Discrimination, human rights, and law are all related topics that are incredibly complex. The legal definition of discrimination is the treatment of a person or group differently than others because of their race, sex, nationality, sexual orientation, age, or disability.

There are both federal and provincial laws that protect people from discrimination. Several international treaties address discrimination in different ways. The main goal of these laws is to stop discrimination against minorities and people with disabilities so they can live their lives with dignity as equals under the law.

The first step in any discrimination case is proving that there was actual discrimination based on one of the protected categories listed above. This can be difficult because it's often hard to prove direct causation between an employer or landlord's actions and an employee/tenant's behaviour or circumstances which led to those actions.

For example: if an employee gets fired for no reason at all (or for something unrelated to their disability), then it would be difficult for them to prove that they were discriminated against because of their disability. Hence, if there wasn't any evidence supporting this claim such as comments made by supervisors about not wanting disabled employees working at this company anymore or anything like that - unless you have some kind of documentation.

We'll Help You Make it Right Again

As a human rights paralegal firm, we know that discrimination is a serious issue.

It's not just wrong—it's illegal. And it can have a devastating impact on you and your family.

If you've been discriminated against in any way at work, school, or by the government, then you should know that there are resources available to help you stand up for yourself and your rights.

First off: if you're being discriminated against because of your race or ethnicity, then you might be able to file a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC). This agency gives civil rights protection to people who have been discriminated against because of their race or colour (or religion or sex). You can also file a complaint with the Ontario Ministry of Labor if you feel like your employer has violated labour laws.

If someone has discriminated against you because of your sexual orientation or gender identity—for example by not hiring you because they think you're gay—then we may be able to help with that too! If they've done something illegal like fire you or deny benefits based on the fact that they don't agree with who you choose to love, then we may be able to help.
